Spiritual Direction

Introducing Kim Voyle, the Spiritual Duirector

What to expect in a spiritual direction session

Spiritual direction sessions start with a prayer, a lighting of a candle, or any practice that invites our awareness of Divine Love present with us. In a spiritual direction there are three of us in the room, the client, God, and the spiritual companion. The client will talk about their experience with God, perhaps one that was significant in their life. As the monthly sessions continue, we can dialogue about your daily life experiences as we listen to your heart and soul share what is important to you. Some people talk about their prayer life, their relationship with God, their image of God, where they find God in the midst of daily living, discerning the way forward in the midst of a decision, or other topics that are important in their lives. Together we take a long, loving look at reality and enhance awareness of God with us. The director/companion is called to listen and reflect with you. The sessions are approximately one hour and usually meet once per month.

Why would someone seek spiritual direction?

In my experience, spiritual direction is a time to explore the spiritual aspect of your life and relationships. The directee/client sets the agenda and has an open-ended and gentle conversation about their interior, spiritual life. This allows us to open our perspective to find God's love for you as a beloved child of God. Some find it helpful to explore their prayer life or to discern what God is calling them to do. Others may have found that their usual spiritual practices are evolving and want to have someone to explore this with them. It is non-judgmental and confidential. It is an opportunity to reflect and pause in the midst of daily life.

Who becomes a spiritual director?

The specialized training recommended for spiritual directors is usually a two-year course of study involving education and a practicum. Kim has a certificate in spiritual direction from San Francisco Theological Seminary. A key component of the training is to discern if you have a call to be a spiritual director. The training also requires that the student has their own spiritual director and Kim has had the opportunity to have the same spiritual director for over 30 years. She has benefited enormously from spiritual direction, and wishes to share this opportunity with others. It is recommended that all spiritual directors have supervision which can be with an individual or a peer group. While in was in training, she was assigned a supervisor with whom she could confidentially share my experiences as a spiritual director. He had decades of experience as a spiritual director and working with directors in training. After she received my certificate she became involved with a group of peers who provide me with wise guidance. Kim's peers live and work in other states and any discussion of clients is anonymous. Kim is a member of Spiritual Directors International (SDI) and attend continuing education. SDI requires members to adhere to a set of ethical guidelines which are similar to ethical guidelines for counselors.
